Does The Slow Carb Diet Really Work?

by Court under Diet, Nutrition

Last year I decided to try the slow carb diet as outlined in The Four Hour Body. Of course before last year, no one had heard of the diet, myself included.

Tim Ferris created the diet based on a lot of research into the glycemic index. The idea behind the diet is basically to control blood sugar spikes by eating only slow carbs - carbs that are digested slowly. If you want to learn the details about the diet, you can read them here.

My Personal Experience With The Slow Carb Diet

I tried the slow carb diet for about four weeks and honestly, I really liked it. I experienced very little hunger, especially after the first few days. If I had known what I know now, I could have eaten a little more fat while on the diet to create an even better experience. I was still pretty gun-shy when it comes to eating fat and fat helps you to control your hunger a lot.

I lost a few pounds a week when I was on slow carb. I didn’t lose as much as Tim Ferriss did. That makes sense because Tim is a hard-gainer. In other words he’s a pretty small guy and gaining weight for him is difficult. I, on the other hand, can easily gain a pound a day for pretty much as long as I want. It’s hard for me to lose weight and fat so I was pretty happy with how my body reacted to the diet.

The slow carb style diet is one of two diets that are endorsed by The Skinny School. I actually prefer a paleo diet because my body feels a little better, but slow carb is a solid second choice.

Things That Weren’t Great About Slow Carb

The main thing that isn’t great about the slow carb diet is that you eat a LOT of beans and lentils. Honestly, I don’t want to see another can of beans as long as I live and I didn’t do slow carb for that long. Not only did I get tired of eating beans, I got tired of being full of gas 24/7. I still endorse this diet as it’s very effective and is solid for health, but you’re going to have to deal with eating a lot of beans if you try it.

Paleo eating is similar in nature to slow carb, but your digestive system feels a lot better when you eat paleo. Both slow carb and paleo keep you away from foods that will make you gain fat.

Conclusion

The slow carb diet is definitely worth trying out and I endorse it. It’s effective and is much better than a lot of other diets when it comes to maintaining your health.

    Court,

I have been a huge advocate of the slow carb diet for a while now, and if followed to the “t”, I believe it to be 99% effective. The problem for me is, sometimes it’s hard to stay on it, and you find yourself wanting to cheat. But I realize with any diet, you will always find yourself in situations where you want to have a beer with your friends, grab a slice of pizza, and watch the game.

My question for you is, the paleo diet, is there anything like a “cheat day” included in that diet similar to the slow carb diet? I notice that it’s pretty much the same with the exception of being allowed to eat a few more carbs, including fruit. But I was curious to know if there is anything that enables you to take one day off per week, and also wondering if exercise is required for the diet to be effective. Thanks!

Hey Shane! You could definitely take a cheat day on paleo, but most of the ‘paleo diet people’ would never tell you to do it.

The principles of the cheat day would be pretty much the same so go for it!

Sounds like you’ve read the 4 hour body. No, exercise isn’t necessary for the paleo diet to work. But, just like the slow carb diet, you can improve the results with exercise!
